I'll finish the tin, but this won't be in my rotation. This is strong stuff, but smooth with it. It's mellow & smooth all the way to the bottom of the bowl. But for now (to me) it just isn't that great a smoke. I like Peterson's Irish Flake; that one's pretty strong. I would not call it an everyday smoke by a long shot, but it is a very unique, flavorful, and strong smoking experience. Although my fav is Balkan Supreme, this really surprised me. But the smoke is far more understated, so don't be put off. Similar Blends: Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake with Perique.. 47 people found this review helpful. I stopped smoking pipes pretty much. Not the same, but with some similarities. This tobacco was recommended to me after my tobacconist was out of a virginia blend that i was looking for. I'd give it three stars except for the burn and slight bite. Well, I think that all pretty well sums up my opinions of this flake. My favourite being BBF I went for something that had "cocoa-chocolate", a bit stronger than BestBrown. I had found that the SG line of flakes were very inconsistently sized. The flakes break up with ease, and I find it works best just lightly rubbed. The aroma was very tobacco-ey and rich! It also has a trange flaovring. But what I do know is that it is a great quality tobacco that if I could buy some at suggested retail price, ha, I would. A shame this is no longer in production, I think at the time I tried this my palette was simply not ready for the stronger tobaccos with the more robust flavours. If 1792 is too much but you still kinda like dark flakes, try this one. My only complaint with this blend is that it can get bitey on the finish in the summer. Another great blend from SG&C. Lurking in and out you get a periodic Virginia tang. By half-way the Virginia sweetness is there too ? One of the key words here is strong - this is not for the faint of heart, or for beginner pipe smokers. I like navy style with the rum and they are the few blends that allow a topping to help the blend. This frustrates me because it makes me wonder just how infectious some ideas are. Phone/Office hours are: Monday-Friday 9am-4pm est. It is powerful, and not unpleasant; but too much of it leaves me with a pain in my throat. Unlike, say, GH Dark Flake, Bracken Flake is darker, earthy, lacking the brighter vegetal notes of DF, yet darkly sweet (i.e., molasses/caramel-like). Description says "unique and alluring aroma" hmm.. not so sure about it, actually the scent reminds me indian incense sticks which I don't like. It is fairly dry for a scented flake, but the scenting is just a touch or so. MTLOGBY. The underlying flavor of the tobacco is that of dark English flake, ala G&H Dark Flake and Dark Birdseye which I like a lot, but not excessively bitter or as tangy. Given that I'd rather smoke 1792 or Dark Flake, I can't see reaching for this much. This my first SG tobacco but not my first flake. We have blended a carefully balanced selection of Kentucky & dark fired leaf to give this medium to strong flake. I crumbled up a flake and then I noticed the sweet smell of their secret sauce. Perhaps this has some orientals giving rise to this whisper underlying and playing off the sweetness? I enjoyed this, and find it easy to recommend. This puts it just ahead of the Peterson University flake. I don't mean to imply this is not a quality tobacco. The nicotine was a little over the top for me and detracted from my ability to enjoy the tobacco. Best after lunch or dinner. This deep, almost black dark fired flake packs some punch. Open the tin and you find a stack of (usually) very thin, very dark chocolate coloured, raggedy looking flakes. They are both delicious in their own way. I will not waste my money or time with something what smells like arse fruit. A strong tobacco all around. A medium bodied-smoke that is easy to enjoy all day. I wish I had known this beforehand so I could have stocked up on it! I recognized the guys handwriting on the tin that he dated. The only drawback for me is that it is the only tobacco where I have to have a glass of water on hand, because it inevitably starts to tickle the back of my throat and will give me the hiccups if I don't drink a little water when smoking it. On to the smoking. I am convinced I don't like the taste of Tonquin. Although this has been discontinued, I stumbled across some tins for sale from My Smoking Shop U.K.. No real flavors that jump out at you just a simple medium to strong smoke that really satisfies all my smoking desire. I prefer 1792, as it has more robust tobacco flavor and a sweeter topping. The man who gave me this deserves a good SMACK! Gets a bit stronger in flavor at the bottom. If you aren't ready for a strong full bodied smoke then this one will be hard to enjoy. Hic cups may follow if smoked in a large bowl. Thick, dry/moist flakes that you have to shake out quite a bit pack well with a light touch. Admittedly all these cross-references to 1792 may be a bit confusing: These are two tobaccos at completely different ends of the flavour range. Bracken, a coarse fern common in the U.K. The taste is quite full and strong on the palate, earthy, with suggestions of cherry fruit and Brazil nuts. Definitely not for the first timer. Sam Gawith's tobaccos are among my favorites, but I can't get past the unusual flavoring. Taste is full. Very dark and rich, monochromatic and powerful, but not bitter or over the top. It is very deep and smooth but powerful. Sorry, persons under the age of 18 cannot use this site. Now where did I put the sand paper for my tongue??? That said, if you like stout blends and enjoy other dark-fired offerings, this is a must-try. If you like deep, earthy smokes then you'll really like this (and 1792). SOLD OUT !!! I should have smoked it in a smaller bowled pipe. I had no problem with it funking my pipe though, or leaving any goop in the bottom of the bowl. (Don't microwave it, since that seems to compromise the fragile oils and alter the flavor characteristics.) I found that drying it under a bright light for 15-45 minutes or so until it's a little stiff (but not brittle) brought it to life. Tobacco Varieties Used: Burley, Cavendish, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia Flake Cut - Brown Sugar Flake is a Samuel Gawith/Danish Pipe Shop collaboration, the goal of which was to create a fuller-bodied ode to the old Orlik Brown Sliced. I think this blend is Gawith 1792 Flake with an added flavoring that has been substituted for the Tonquin in 1792. Cob plug is the perfect tobacco for the connoisseur pipe smoker as it packs a good punch of strength and flavour from this blend of dark fired, oven baked mellow tobacco. I was devastated by the news, and am only now coming to terms with it. A strange tobacco. Dating all the way back to 1792, British Samuel Gawith is among the oldest brands in the world of pipes and tobacco. It has a delicate sweetness, but is so high in nicotine and cigar-like flavor, I have trouble enjoying it. STRONG!!! Nice broken (bracken) flake, and one I'll repeat. Update: If you want to know what SG brown rope tastes like without having to fuss preparing the rope for pipe smoking, try Bracken Flake. Cut: Flake. Once submitted, any posts, images, or content become the property of Badger & Blade. It seems that "our long national nightmare is over". Smoked, this was very good. Grousemoor seems like a beginner tobacco compared to this tobacco. Crowns up beautifully on the charring light. So don't overdo the drying. Some rubbing-out may enhance the experience. I'm curious as to what flavors other reviewers detect. Lovers of stronger Lakeland style blends should have this one on the must try list. We are committed to providing our services only to people who are of the proper age, and to protecting our youth as best as we possibly can. I was very impressed with how smooth and cool this flake smoked. I got a tasty, easy to smoke, non-Lakeland flavored, fairly powerful weed that, while it didn't seem to develop much down the bowl, smoked "earthy-sweet" from rim to dottle. I'm going to try it again but I don't get it. Whereas 1792 is loaded with this essence, Bracken has a dark sweetness to it, much like burnt caramel or molasses. Quite a bit of the old stuff I have today is from what I bought. Too strong..made me gagand I gave this stuff many chances in the last 2 years. There was a mild fruitiness but I did not get the dark chocolate others have mentioned. When the water burns it can cause harshness and tongue bite. I read a lot of the reviews posted here and find most of them quite interesting and informative. The presses and cutters used by S. Gawith are of Robert Legg manufacture, a company founded 1849 and became the major player powerhouse in providing heavy industrial machinery to the UK tobacco industry -- especially notable for pipesmokers are Robt. Real faint but this could be due to the age of the tobacco. What else can I say? That tradition continues today and it's evident in every bowl. It is tangy, and maybe has a little tonquin action going on, but again, none is noted. Flakes break up fairly easily, but unevenly. I do not detect the "intimidating" aroma in the pouch (a curious word, that, to use in promoting a tobacco!) This is the real thing! Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. The burley helps round it out too (but not as round as SG Kendal Cream Flake). Please confirm that you are over the age of 18 to continue. The sweet scent (be it dark cherry or whatever; certainly no strong "bean" flavors here) is just slight to make the dark toasted leaf smoke sweet. Individual reviews are the opinion(s) of the contributor and do not reflect the opinion(s) Unfortunately I am not a fan of Grousemoor's topping which would detract my enjoyment of Bracken Flake. Both times I smoked it in a small bowl. Not as strong (in the nicotine or woozy dept.) I'm finding that these Lakeland flakes have their own unique appeal.
